Recital Season

The new Spring and Summer seasons bring with them the excitement (and slight chaos) of recital season. The weeks leading up to a show are filled with extra rehearsals, staff meetings, and lots of conversations regarding preparations for the show. This photo session was during a mini dress rehearsal where students practiced their pieces in full costume. So much work went into these pieces from the rehearsal time to the bedazzling of the costumes. One teacher stayed up till 3am to add the last few crystals to some costumes. It truly is a team effort and takes a village to put on a show with all of the proper lighting, flooring, audio, backstage volunteers, ticket sales, and stage managing.

All of the pieces photographed here were choreographed for the dancer and audience member to have a worship experience with their Creator, God. The beauty and power of dance is its ability to to tell a story or create thoughts and emotions solely with movement. Strong dance pieces that utilize spacing and create sounds, shapes, textures, and speeds create a sense of wonder and take the audience to a place the choreographer intended. There is a responsibility and power on the choreographers part, and the dancer plays messenger while the audience is the recipient. It is a wonder to experience a live performance, but being in this rehearsal studio brought me right into the place that was dearest to the choreographer's heart; the wonder of God's presence.
